Can I pinpoint the EXACT location of my fans using a single image?

A few weeks ago I successfully and swiftly identified the exact Bali swimming pool that a random Instagram model was snapped, following a request from an alleged victim of a catfish. I did this using a mixture of Geoguessr knowledge, Google Earth and Google's search engine. Following some dialogue with my impressed patreons, an idea was spawned. Why don't I make a series out of it where I try to successfully identify where my patreons/fans are using the small amounts of information that can be seen in the background? Here's the result.

  • you need to draw your lines in 3d space because the angle that will line up with the first bend in the apartment building from the pov of the photo needs to be in the air and not on the ground

You could try to take a screenshot in the google earth view at a similar angle (without clipping back to brasil) and drawing a similar view line on top of the screenshot to compare...

  • your line drawing technique is actually not the correct way to do it. you need to make a vertical line in the middle because when you make a slanted one, the change of levels messes it up.

  • I do believe that drawing the line from a target point on the photo to the bottom center of the picture could be a viable strategy for determining the location/alignment of the location *BUT ONLY IF* the picture is NOT zoomed in. That picture being looked at and compared to @22:32 is clearly zoomed in, meaning the bottom of the photo is going to be artificially shifted to the side away from the initial focal point.

Then find two more from the other side of the image and do the same. They should cross at the location of the camera on the map.

  • The location system should work if you were able to figure out angles from you to two different points and a 0-degree angle point established to serve as an orientation point. the lines would be pointed in straight lines from you to those points. With this method, you should be able to figure out where they connect at the end, you would have to guess the length of those lines and you are there. I hope you'll understand this description in my words, cause I¨m not English and hopefully, it helps.

  • Yes I think you need a mathematician or image scientist. i think you would need to account for the lens and sensor size of the camera used. since most people are using phone cameras, maybe you could distinguish android v iphone kinda like generations of camera in google maps. Both phones used different sensors and sadly a wide variety of lens types as well, but you could maybe come up with a decent focal length and sensor size estimate to use as baseline. From there, you would ideally compare pixel size (found in your image browser), with a height or width estimate of what you are looking at (found either in Google Earth or by googling/guessing). Then, with an estimate of the focal length of the lens, you could find the distance and from there i feel that the angles would be better estimated in 3D space. simple trigonometry could get you the information you need to know and additionally, you could just determine alot about the distances. Field of view is important to know too, cameras have a set angular field of view in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Once you know say, the horizontal field of view of your camera, you could find distances with simple parallax (if you know the length of a flat facing object that the camera is looking at, find of what percentage of the pixels in the horizontal direction it takes up and you can estimate the field of view angle it takes up and thus the distance)
