  • I strongly disagree with Valves's approach: creating a chinese communist party approved version of steam (which is the same as a censored and government supervised version) is just supporting censorship in order to get money from the chinese market. that is an american company doing political censorship to support a criminal regime. Bottom line is, as Linus said, Valve has no guarantee that it's chinese version of steam won't be banned in the future.

  • American companies do the same thing here -- it's just that you're ok with it because they belong to a different political party. There's nothing worse than being lectured about censorship from someone on the left, the people that created cancel culture and push "hate speech" legislation. Who defines what hate is? Only people with absolute power: authoritarians. Cancel culture is a grass roots authoritarian movement, as hilarious as that is to say and you're treading in extremely dangerous waters once the government realizes that a large percentage of people are OK with that type of legislation. Canada is already doing this. The UK follows -- god have mercy on us if the United States mindless drones push legislation like this into the books.

  • Criticizing China from abroad without knowing anything about the culture and relying on your perception of it through western media outlets might be easy, but fundamentally flawed. You might be surprised if you knew how the average gamer in Xian sees your videos, reviewing and commenting on stuff from a western perspective. Maybe you'd be surprised about how many people (and remember, 1 in 4 people on this planet are Chinese) do not share the opinions you often share about innovation being the pinnacle of civilization and how competition is so good for the people. No worries though... Something tells me that soon enough the western world will take some much needed, although very abrupt lessons on the Chinese culture. In the meantime, you live in a free country so you can keep arresting Huawei officials as spies, support the oppressed Hong Kong & Xinjiang people and play Battlefield 4. After all, isn't that what we live for? I hope you sold some jackets with this video and you didn't jump on board the "let's blame China for everything" boat for nothing.

  • I am a Chinese player, but I am not unable to access the Steam international version now, and no one is using the Steam Chinese version. We have something called an accelerator here. You can access the Steam community even in China, so even if you really put Steam The international version is banned, and people can still use the Steam international version. Also, it is illegal to invest and build a VPN in China...

I don't know what's funnier, China calling their country the "People's republic" or telling their people that they're a republic while forbidding them from having any dissent on the government. China is just an oxymoron in its entirety.

  • This will be the norm in 15 years. There are simply too many people in places where mandatory censorship and tracking of citizens' activity, namely India and China, is currently the status-quo. There are also too few people in the west who care enough to use their collective power to 'vote with their wallets' when it comes to private compliance with government censorship, and politically fight for their rights to privacy and anonymity.
