First Wash in 44 years! Barn Find Datsun 280z with only 350 Original Miles

This is the rarest Datsun 280z Barn find ever recorded (as I've been told) with only 350 original miles! It was left in a barn near Hershey Pennsylvania before its first wash in 44 years! You'd expect this to be a complete detailing disaster because it was left untouched for so long...but the paint was in good condition despite being covered in filth and disgusting grime. In this barn find, we use AMMO Frothe to remove the first layer of dust and dirt to ensure the rubber seals did not leak if we power washed. Once confident, we power washed the paint, then compounded and polished with a Rupes polisher during our paint restoration. The Datsun 280z has since won several awards at Zcon and more information can be found at

  • So why did they think it was a good idea to wipe the caked-on dirt with SEVERAL passes with the same cloth, when they already had planned to use a pressure washers on the car? That didn't seem very thought out to me. I know they want to "get a feel for it", but it's not like it's not just a dirty car?

  • My sister had a Datsun 280Z and a transmission shop who put a clutch in it was trying to bilk her out of more money. Dad dropped me off in her town and we got the 280 home and the new clutch was slipping terribly. I pulled the transmission back one cold January no heat and examined everything and everything was spec put everything back in and the same problem. So I pulled the transmission all the way out of the car and that's a big job and the rear suspension bolts come out to slide it back so driveshaft and everything will clear. I poured over everything slipped the trans out of the case and we went over everything. I put it together again and the same thing so I was at wits end a cold teenager crushed fingers hide missing cold soaked I walked out on the ranch lot where dad still had a Datsun 720 pickup, and I pulled the clutch cylinder and brought it over but the holes didn't quite line up but I pulled the operating rod out of it and then the operating rod out of the 280z and right away the mystery was solved as the operating rod on her car had been roughly cut too long with a hot saw out of bar stock and the other end they had carefully ground a radius. It was very apparent it was deliberate and I had spent 14 hour days and a week to figure it out and cutting the rod the same length as the pickup it worked like a champ. A dishonest mechanic can cause you headaches, and often recourse is unattainable, but my Grandparents still farmed around the mechanics town and knew everyone. The mechanic had thought my sister was alone in that small city but after Grandma and Grandad informed the boys at the COOP, the dishonest mechanic quickly went out of business. lol

  • My dad bought the first Japanese car in the area, a Datsun 180B Coupé '73. It was a wonderful car, and the one I learned to drive in too. It served us without any trouble what so ever for 20 years and 450,000 kms. But of course, my dad REALLY wanted a Datsun 240Z. I just wonder what would happen if he stumbled on something like that blue 280Z... They did really great cars. My aunt had a 100A Cherry which was a very funny and also really good little thing, zooming around. Dad was told "you'll have no car left within two years". But the sceptics fell silent one after the other. I remember driving the 180 in -41°C and it could take it. It's just sad that they stopped making these "tough little guy-designs" where they tried to look a bit like US cars. They got much uglier and more boring in the 80's. I can but congratulate. That's really the barnfind of a lifetime. And a 280Z which is almost like new.... that's just something you dream of...

  • I had a 1981 model, and lived that car. Bought it used with 125k miles on it, which was a lot for a car made in 1981; I bought it in 1992. The previous owner had taken great care of it, and had most of the maintenance records in a thick pile of papers. That ar was so solid, and so reliable that I have been sold on Japanese cars since then. Oh, and I drove the piss out of it. Did my own oil changes, and belt replacements, plugs, etc. The engine was packed in under the hood, but everything was still easily accessible. The plugs were right on top of the block on the in line 6. I ended up getting sideswiped by an 18 wheeler as he made a late lane change, and didn't see me in the turn lane next to him. The door, driver side quarter panel, and a tire and wheel were damaged, but it still drive as if nothing had happened. Truckers insurance company screwed me around, offered 1500 for a total loss,or 750,and I get to keep the car. Well, I needed a car to get to work, and couldn't afford a lawyer so I took the $750. Life is especially hard on a young man of little means, living on his own. If only my dad could have given me a "small" 20million dollar loan like Donald Trump. Anyway, life goes on.
