Part 6 - Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car.

In part 6 of Bargain Racement, we look back at what happened in our first race and plan some improvements to try and go a little faster. We go to Wales for some testing before heading back to the shed for some last minute fettling.

Bad Obsession MotorsportBad Obsession Motorsport23 päivää sitten
  • The exploitation of grey areas in the rules might be my favourite part of racing. Engine wise could you get away with a balanced rotating assembly, polish the engine and exhaust and ceramic coat the cylinder walls. Also maybe a larger fuel pump, race fuel with a piggyback ecu and flex fuel censor? Chassis wise if you remove more weight you could have a flat underbody which would have an areodynamic advantage and lower the centre of gravity. You could seamweld the door seam, door frames, stut tops and perhaps lower the engine.

  • I absolutely love the fact you didn't just go like "meh, if we can't weld onto the chassis, it's not even worth it to try with brackets and screws" and did it. It was really good seeing you testing it somehow too, scientifically with the jack, and not just say "yeah, we bolted them together, it's better, bye". Really my kind of entertainment these parts are!

  • Guys in the words of one Mr Rascal, I'm loving it, loving it, loving it. However, and say this with complete admiration. Could you do an instructional episode, of an 'OCD' complete car service. As in the best servicing you could do to your car. What are the best spark plugs, why should you gap them, oil filter selection and also if you want better brake discs and pads, how not to get stuck with run of the mill, rad flush (should you use rad flush), should you use engine flush. Basically be yourselves. Seb

  • you can change under-steer and over-steer by putting different tire pressures front to back - for instance if all pressures were equal and you were experiencing understeer - just take a little out of the fronts and put it in the rear - the front will gain a little traction, the rears will loose some and then you'll either be neutral again in corners or over-do it and end up with over-steer. :D And, tire chemistry can make a huge difference - can you change tire brands? Bridgestone RE-71's would stick you to the road like rails.

  • One thing you can do to stiffen a chassis (depending on the wording of the regulations ) is to spray some closed cell fire retardant construction foam into every suitable cavity. You can even make some suitable cavities by riveting some aluminium sheet to the floor and ceiling with a gap of about half an inch between and spraying the foam in between. It has the added benefit of heat shielding and sound deadening for very little weight gain. Doing this can make a floppy sock as stiff as a board.

  • I started on a project car of my own. Nothing to the extent of Binky, however, it does have some brackets that are showing what a life living near the coast in a former ownership looked like. Once i removed the engine to get it disassembled to be inspected and rebuilt, I got to work refinishing the brackets. Strangely, as I was putting a wirewheel attachment to my drill... I heard a faint whisper from Nik "Lets make new ones", so like any logical person, I made new brackets. As I was making the new brackets with my cutting wheel and making 90 degree bends using the bench vice, I could feel the warm yet ghostly feeling of Nik's hands gliding over mine and guiding me to bracket perfection. As if it was the pottery scene from Ghost.

  • OK, I must say that I've enjoyed this series immensely, but I have to admit, I'm quite disappointed with the last episode. Playing devil's advocate and all that, and I have also come from a motorsport background, but I'm disappointed with the "cheating" involved in this. While I respect the modifications Nik & Richard have made, the fact remains that they are exploiting a loophole in the regulations - that being, the exclusion of the "if it doesn't say you can, then you can't" clause. They even highlighted that it was missing, and suggested it was a mistake! I would be very surprised if the publicly-acknowledged omission of this clause isn't immediately rectified with some Supplementary Regulations. At the very beginning of the series, they mentioned quite clearly that this series was developed to be: A) Cheaply affordable for people who can't otherwise afford to get a foot in the door of competitive motorsport, and B) the basis was that all cars were identical, so any success (or otherwise) came down purely to the skill of the driver, and not any mechanical, electronic or financial benefit that one team has over another. I'm sorry - as much as I thoroughly enjoy the engineering/fabrication & personal abilities of these 2 incredible people, this is out-and-out cheating, and goes beyond the "spirit" of the series. Their everyday jobs is exactly this - being paid to exploit loopholes in regulations and build competitive racecars for their customers. But that's NOT what this particular series is supposed to be about. This is not F1 or WRC. Fully expecting other people to respond to this comment with historical comparisons along the lines of "this is what motorsport is about, look at what Ferrari did in F1, look what Audi did in rallying" blah blah blah...... But please don't. This ISN'T world-class motorsport. This isn't even the "normal" class of rallying that Nik & Richard regularly compete in. This is SUPPOSED to be a ground-roots foot-in-door motorsport series.... What they are now doing is cheating, or at the very least, against the spirit of the sport; pure and simple.

    • If you launched a new series and had just 3 or 4 races in a truncated year to sort a set of regulations out in advance of the first championship year, wouldn't you want a pair of sneaky bastards to stress test the rules? Because that's what we've done. And if you read the rules, it states that you have to check with the organisers before doing anything. There was nothing underhand here at all. So jump off your high horse...
